Protein metabolism and pathways

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

Protein Metabolism is nothing but a series of chemical reaction process responsible for the synthesis and breakdown of proteins and amino acids. Proteins are comprised of oxygen, hydrogen, carbon and nitrogen. These biochemical catalysts form the cellular structure. Protein is the only nutrient that contains nitrogen which plays the key role for the formation of different amino acids. Proteins are the organic compounds of amino acids which are the essential nutrients in building the muscle tissue and organs. Amino acids are very essential for building the cell structures .If the presences of amino acids are in excess state then it was converted into fat and later used for energy metabolism.

The amino groups are transformed from muscles to liver by the glucose –alanine cycle for the conversion of these amino acids into glucose. All amino acids are converted into glucose for the occurrence of catabolism in liver as it plays a major role in holding the essential amino acids. Due to the action of insulin the plasma amino acids are damaged by dietary carbohydrate.

The body exposes to prolonged starvation or illness due to the breakdown of proteins by the inadequate supply of energy .Brain tissues uses the preference of liver for utilizing the proteins in it. Liver cells and kidney cells are the only two organs to contain the gluconeogenesis pathway which are used for the conversion of amino acids into glucose.

The protein metabolism is carried in two path ways:
Protein catabolism: Protein catabolism is the process of breaking down the amino acid group into smaller units for the easy transfer of energy through blood to the cells. Protein catabolism is also referred to as digestion process of nutrients. During protein catabolism vitamin B6 is present in amino acids for transamination of nitrogen from one acid to another acid. In this process L-glutamate is formed by the transamination of amino acids and later this product is converted into ammonia by oxidative deamination. By this ammonia, urea synthesis is carried out and transmitted to the kidneys through blood and released out in the urination. Carbon dioxide, Adenasine triphosphate, urea, water and ammonia are the final products of protein catabolism.

Protein anabolism: Protein Anabolism is the process of grouping the smaller amino groups into larger protein molecule for building up the organs and muscle tissues.
Maple urine disease, albinism, histidinaemia, tyrosinaemia and alkaptonuria are the disease caused due to the disorders of protein metabolism.

Nutrition Metabolism is a series of chemical reactions used to synthesize and produce energy from Carbohydrates, proteins, fat, minerals, fibers, vitamins and water. Nutrients are classified into two types they are macronutrients and micronutrients.
Macronutrients are nothing but the chemical elements comprised of hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, sulfar and phosphorous. Macronutrients are available in large quantities which produces more energy during consume of this chemical elements.
Vitamins, minerals and fats come under micronutrients as there ere available in small quantities.

The following nutrient provides energy in large quantities:

Carbohydrates: Carbohydrates is comprised of fructose, galactose and glucose .Glucose is the important carbohydrate found in food and also the major source of energy available in the form of fluids for the living organisms. During the process of food digestion glucose, galactose and fructose are obtained and transferred to liver from intestinal vein. Glucose is stored temporarily in the form of glycogen in liver or muscle and from their all the body tissues utilizes the energy. If the body contains excess amount of glucose it was converted into amino acids, fat and biological compounds.

Proteins: Proteins are comprised of oxygen, hydrogen, carbon and nitrogen.

Fats: Fat nutrient consists of fatty acids with glycerin molecules. These acids are obtained from unbranched hydrocarbon chains connected by both saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. The cell membranes functioning system is entirely controlled by these fatty acids. These fatty acids are really helpful in keeping stable body temperature, healthy hair and skin structure.
These are the following substances that support metabolism:
Water: Water is the best solvent substance in which all kinds of chemical reactions can take place. It is the best substance that supports metabolism.
Vitamins: Vitamins are the essential organic compounds to the living organism. Vitamins support metabolism at high rate. They act as cofactors or co enzymes in the body structure of the living organisms.
Dietary minerals: Chemical elements are referred to dietary minerals, there are iron and copper. These chemical elements are very important to cause metabolism.
Nutrient metabolism disorder causes Maple urine, albinism, histidinaemia, tyrosinaemia, alkaptonuria, diabetes, galactosemia, mellitus and lactose intolerance disease.

What is cell metabolism and metabolic pathways

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

Cell Metabolism is a process of both physical and chemical reactions required for synthesizing the essential nutrients by the living cells in order to make a living state. Cell is the smallest functional and structural unit of living organisms. Cell is also called as building brick of living organism. Some living organisms contain only single cell, like bacteria and fungus. Other Organisms, like humans and mammals contain several cells called as muticellular.
Each and every cell contains self-maintaining stability and also can convert all the nutrients into required energy form. These cells can reproduce other cells by themselves. Every cell contains specialized instructions and functions for making out required activities. Cells have reproduction system by cell division process. These cells make use of enzymes and proteins for energy transformation.
Cell movement takes place during many processes like wound healing, immune response and cancer disease. The white blood cells move to the wound to kill the microorganisms and protects from infection and other fibroblasts cells helps in reconstructing the damaged structure of the living organisms .
The process by which each and every cell synthesizes nutrients is called as cell metabolism. The growth of cells depends upon the cellular metabolism.

The Cell Metabolism is divided into two distinct divisions of metabolic pathways, there are Cell Catabolism and Cell Anabolism. Cell catabolism is the process of breaking down the complex molecule structure into smaller groups for yielding energy and decreasing power, and cell anabolism is the metabolic process of grouping smaller units into larger groups for building complex structure and by consuming the energy .Cells performs biological functions during anabolism.

The Complex sugars which are consumed by the organisms are broken down into smaller units called glucose .This glucose is again broken down inside the cell to form energy (Adenosine triphosphate).
This energy is derived in two different path ways: First path way is called as glycolysis, this chemical reaction process doesn’t require oxygen to produce energy and it is called as anaerobic metabolism. This chemical reaction produces hydrogen ions which are used to create Adenosine triphosphate (energy packets).Glycolysis is the only process takes place in prokaryotes cells for energy formation.
The second pathway is called as citric acid cycle which is used to produce sufficient energy packets to perform specified functions and instructions of the cells. This process occurs inside the mitochondria of the cell.
Cell metabolism disorders produces rapid cell growth and causes cancer, bone marrow disease , blood disease, tuberculosis, viral infections and autoimmune disease.

5 quick tips to increase your metabolism

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

Metabolism is nothing but a process of burning and storing the calories within the cells of living organisms. If you want to reduce your weight so please concentrate on your metabolism rate. As the metabolism rate depends on the body structure, age, schedule/activities and food intake try to figure out these factors to maintain a health steady state.
If you have higher metabolism your body looses more weight by burning fat calories at high rate. Doing over exercises doesn’t help you in loosing weight.
So to maintain dynamic equilibrium you have to boost tour metabolism by following these 5 quick steps:
1. Muscle building and weightlifting: Muscle tissues consume more calories during workouts. Try to improve more muscle mass to burn more calories. The whole body movement during weight lift will burn the calories at high rate. So do exercise regularly to increase your metabolism.
2. Planning proper diet: Planning proper diet with rich protein and carbohydrate food will really helpful in increasing the metabolism. Carbohydrate and protein content food really increases the human metabolism rate. Generally our body requires more energy to break down the complex molecules of carbohydrates and proteins to use them. So for the digestion purpose of this complex we need to burn out some calories which in turn increase the metabolism rate.
3. Small meals: Taking small meals regularly will increase the metabolism. If you have a long break after the meals you body stores the fat and stops burning the calories and your body will suffer from starvation mode. So in order to stop this starvation you need to take small meals at regular intervals of time.
4. Drinking water: Drinking water regularly throughout the day will really increase the metabolism rate. Having water daily will stops your body from thirst and hunger .Water helps in removing toxins and calories from the body.
5. Take fatty acids and avoid drugs: Omega -3 fatty acids have rich content of fish oils which burns the calories and reduces inflammation in muscles and joints. Fatty acids also helps in preventing heart disease and cancer. : Using diet pills without proper precautions causes damage to the internal digestive system and brings more health related problems. Diet supplement pills are not clinically approved to increase the metabolism rate and more over causes damage to dynamic equilibrium. Avoid alcohol as it decreases the metabolism rate.

What is metabolism and how to increase metabolic rate ?

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

Metabolism is a process of chemical reactions that take place within the cells of living organisms to drive the energy from one form to another form. Every living organism carries a series of chemical reactions to build their cell structure to grow. Enzymes drive the chemical reactions to transfer one form of energy into another to maintain the survival of living beings. This enzyme plays an important role in driving metabolic pathways to produce chemical reactions in living organisms and also controls the flow rate of chemical reactions depending on the need of energy by the organs and tissues.

Metabolism is grouped into two divisions , Catabolism and the other is Anabolism. Catabolism is one of the part of metabolism pathways which breaks the organic matter (large molecules) into smaller groups for the release of energy into the cells. Anabolism is a set of metabolic pathways tends to grow up the organs and tissues by utilizing the energy produced by the break up of organic matter by catabolism. The living organism gains weight and growth if the Anabolism pathway exceeds Catabolism and similarly the living organism losses weight if Catabolism pathway exceeds Anabolism. And dynamic equilibrium is achieved when both the metabolic pathways are balanced.

Metabolism targets three basic classes of organic matter (molecules) like Amino acids, Lipids and Carbohydrates for making and breaking of these molecules for the source of energy to grow the cell structures. Amino acids, proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, Coenzymes, Minerals and Nucleotides are the key biomolecules used by the enzymes to make chemical reactions for transfer of energy from one form to required form.

How to increase metabolic rate: Metabolism rate depends on the following factors.

  • Body Structure
  • Age
  • Schedule/activities
  • Food Intake

If the metabolism rate increases, more calories are burned and energy is consumed in high rate. So if you want to lose weight increase your metabolism rate by following these steps.

  • Build Strong Muscles: Having lean muscles helps in consuming more calories and stores sufficient energy for later use.
  • Do not avoid meals: skipping meals regularly doesn’t increase your metabolism rate and more over causes illness and fatigue.
  • Avoid taking diet pills and Alcohol: Using diet pills without proper precautions causes damage to the internal digestive system and brings more health related problems. Diet supplement pills are not clinically approved to increase the metabolism rate and more over causes damage to dynamic equilibrium. Avoid alcohol as it decreases the metabolism rate.
  • Go for aerobic workout: Do aerobics regularly to increase your metabolism rate and loose more weight within short time.
  • Maintain adequate protein in the diet: Try to take high protein content food so that less calories of energy will be stored inside and it will be easy to consume this energy within short time.
  • Have frequent small meals: Having small meals doesn’t make you to gain more weight and more over dynamic equilibrium will be in stable condition.
  • Regular water intake: Regular water intake really helps in increasing the metabolism rate at constant level.
  • Walking: Going for this walking exercise daily helps in getting good metabolism rate in shorter period of time.
  • Having adequate sleep: having adequate sleep really helps in improving the metabolism rate at constant speed. Having sound sleep makes the body to attain dynamic equilibrium.
